We name this ship… IONA
We had great fun producing a series videos for P&O Cruises’ big announcement this week. The name of their new ship, due to join the fleet in May 2020, had been a closely guarded secret and the big reveal came at 4pm on Thursday 24th May.
The name Iona had been chosen from over 30,000 competition entries, and whittled down to one by an expert panel. We travelled to the small Hebrides island with presenter and magician Stephen Mulhern, to shoot the main reveal video to be used for the annoucement across all the brand’s social media channels. Stephen, whose upcoming entertainment show, Astonishing, is due to hit theatres on board the company’s largest ships Britannia, Azura and Ventura this summer, performed a fantastic magic trick to lead viewers to the new ship’s name:
Here is the longer version of the video used on P&O Cruises’ own YouTube channel:
Two further videos were produced for use around the 4pm announcement. Firstly this film featuring P&O Cruises’ Senior Vice President, Paul Ludlow, in which he further explains why the name Iona was selelcted:
And also this video announcing the name of the competition winner:
In the week running up to the announcement, this final video was used as a teaser. Shot back in April at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, during the new ship’s steel cutting ceremony. Both Josh Weinstein, Carnival UK’s President, and Paul Ludlow were there for this important ceremony, which marks the very beginning of the ship taking shape:
