Iona Naming Ceremony

P&O Cruises’ newest ship was official named on Sunday in a star-studded evening ceremony following her long awaited arrival into her home port of Southampton.

Due to the enforced pause in operations for the cruise industry Iona’s christening and maiden season had been delayed for a year.

The virtual quayside ceremony was broadcast online to 25,000 invited guests around the world. Hosted by Jo Whiley and led by P&O Cruises’ President Paul Ludlow, it was an emotional occassion for all those involved. We were commissioned to produce a series of videos for the ceremony, many of which included footage we’d captured during Iona’s arrival earlier in the day, and shoot all aerials during the live event.

Before Captain Wesley Dunlop and Iona’s Godmother, Dame Irene Hays, were welcomed on stage to officially name this stunning ship with a bottle of Alex James’ Britpop sparkling cider, the audience were able to watch Iona’s journey from start to finish, and were introduced to her Food Heroes Olly Smith, Kjartan Skjelde, Marco Pierre White, José Pizarro and Eric Lanlard.

Our film with Dame Irene herself, exploring the work of the Hays Travel Chartiable Foundation was followed with messages of support and congratulations from member of the Hays Travel team. And finally, musician Alex James’ introduced the Nebuchadnezzar of his sparkling cider that would smash in time-honoured traditional on the ship’s hull. The naming took place during an electrifying private set from music legend and Brand ambassador Gary Barlow.

The ceremony is now available to view on P&O Cruises’ website and YouTube channel. We have posted all our content from the ceremony below:
